People have always complimented me for my abilities with type but, when I see work such as the type treatments of people like designer Ji Lee, I realize that I suck. There is a certain spot in the mind of visualizing type that I just don’t have, so when I see examples of type logos that scream creativity, I just have to applaud, admit my jealousy and write an article about it.
Mr. Lee explains how he created the following examples of type treatments:
This project started nearly twenty years ago as an assignment in my typography class at art school. Students were encouraged to see letters beyond their dull, practical functionality. The challenge is to visualize the meaning of a word, using only the graphic elements of the letters forming the word, without adding any outside parts. The challenge was very hard, but the reward of “cracking” a word felt great. So this became a lifelong project for me.
